Workplace injury?
Updated On: Mar 06, 2014

If you have been injured on the job, be certain that you report the injury to your Supervisor.   File an accident report even if the injury seems to be minor.   A minor injury sometimes develops into something more complex and you need to have a written record of what occurred.

When possible, Bergen County will send you to Occupational-Med through Bergen Risk (Worker's Compensation Insurance).   You generally should not be using your major medical and you may be denied payment from major medical because it was an injury sustained at work.    Regardless of what happens, you have a right to seek a second opinion, both through Bergen Risk and independently.

In an ideal situation, the injury heals properly and you return to work with no loss of pay.  The Union contract allows for up to thirty (30) days of INJURY LEAVE at full pay for on the job injuries.  As a practice, you may use work time to attend to follow ups with your physician.  The County however normally does not allow for the scheduling of physical therapy during working hours.  They encourage you to schedule PT after work hours.   If it can not be scheduled after hours, you should contact the Union and/or Personnel.

Additionally, there are cases where you suffer a financial loss or are not able to return to work after your injury leave.  At this point, you may want to consult with a Worker's compensation attorney.  You may do so at no cost to you.

One attorney we are familiar with is Mr. Stephen A. Geffner.   You may, of course, look in the phone book and you will find a number of worker's compensation attorney's in the area.  Mr Stephen A Geffner has attended  our Shop Steward trainings in the past and is available for consultation should you have questions.  He represents injured workers in major worker’s compensation cases and injured parties, generally in personal injury actions of a serious and permanent nature.  He has achieved multi-million dollar results in those cases over the years of his practice.
